pot shaft too wide

Hi all,

don't know if I should put this here or in pickups ...
I ordered a replacement CTS EP-0886 500K pot for my Jackson Dinky, but now it seems the shaft is a little too thick for the metal knobs. Can I sand it down or shouldn't I bother? Did cost me Ä11 though ...
I bought a full shaft since I read that metal knobs with screws needed those.

To avoid future mistakes, how to know what shaft width a pot has? It's not mentioned anywhere (not even on allparts).

Thanks
