Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

Hello MGK 321
I have read your comment about the Original Edge Trem, wich is very
interesting...
You note that it is possible to replace the edge knifes...
is it also the case with the very first Edge, the one with a Floyd Rose style arm holder ?
Do you know a shop or a website in the US where I could buy replacement edge knifes for my trem ? (i'm in France, and it very hard to find parts).
Are they difficult to install ?
Thank you and happy new year
Ludovic

Re: Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

Hey,
Happy new year to you too!
First of all which Edge do to speak of? The first Ibanez Edge, which is also considered the original, had the pop in arm unlike the Floyd. I am a tad confused which Edge you refer too with the screw in arm. Which Ibanez guitar do you have equipped with this trem?

Also anymore Ibanez does not sell knife edges for any of their tremolos anymore. I believe they stopped in 2011. So hypothetically it is possible to replace the edges, but at this point I would say it is not possible due to the cut of supply of the knife edges.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
Thanks ,
mgk321

Re: Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

Hi again MGK 321
My guitar is an old RG550 Desert Yellow...
The trem is the very first Edge model. I can screw the arm with a ring on the chassis, just like with the real Floyds.

One question : on the new RG550 reissues (20th Anniversary), the
tremolo is an exact replica of the original Edge. Maybe it is possible to get
new Knife Edges from Ibanez, or maybe to buy a brand new trem...

What is your opinion about the new Zero Resistance trem ? It seems to
be a good one...
Is it possible to do trembling effects with it by knocking the arm ?

Thank you
Ludovic

Could you post some pictures of your tremolo? i am having trouble picturing an Original Edge with a screw in trem arm.

Hi Ludovic, Welcome to Jemsite!!!

In reading your post, it seems to me that you probably have the original edge trem that MGK is talking about. More than likely a previous owner switched the arm holder to a floyd screw on type....a very common and simple mod.

I'm not sure, but I believe Rich @ www.Ibanezrules.com has knife edges in stock....his link is also at the top of every page. I would contact him before trying anything else.......Rich is a VERY regular member here and will guide you in the best direction to go. His website also has very in-depth guides to repairing you knife edges if new ones are not available.

I'd bet money this is the same guy that wrote and I already told his trem was modified, evidently he doesn't believe it.

Knife edges are no longer available. Send your complaints to Japan please.

I never head of anyone ever using the zero resistance trem on a edge designed guitar.. I don't know if the spacing would even work, and also the ZR has a ball bearing pivot so you would have to rip out the old posts and install the others. That would would be a major pain, and I highly don't recommend it. I don't think anyone has even attempted that yet.

If I were you I would either read up and sharpen the knife points on the original edge, buy a used original edge off ebay, or lastly if all else fails drop an original floyd rose in, if you absolutely can't find a edge. Note though, if you go with the original floyd, they have extremely different feels in my opinion, and I prefer the edge way over the original floyd.

You never really noted what was wrong though with the original edge as well though..

Re: Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but does someone have a new set of knives by any chance? If I had a new set I have a friend that will be able to duplicate them out of titanium (or any harder metal) so they will last heaps longer. Just need a pair to go off and she's apples I'm sure a lot of us would like this... Thoughts?

check with Rich.

Also--Killer Guitar Components may just offer these at some point--they are tackling eveything else, so knife edges are a matter of time.

Re: Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

Every set I sold I'd tell the buyer it wasn't his problem, I've seen 2 bad knives in 15 years.

And who needs a new set to give to a machinist? Pull the set out of any bridge, because you're going to have to do that to replace them anyway

Re: Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

Cool! All makes sense! And I aggree with you Rich that its a rarity but A. A spare set just in case never goes astray and B. I don't have a spare edge guitar that collects dust so taking them out means no that axe for a week or more don't really want to do that till I have too. Ill contact Killer Guitar Components and see where there at, if there on to it ill just wait, if not Ill look further into it. I just don't want these great trems dying of in future years! Its the main wear point my son neads to try them properly when he's old enough! See how it pans out anyway. Worst come to worst should be able to get an old one off ebay for not much...

Cheers for the info!

Re: Question about "Ibanez Edge Tremolo"

When cared for properly, the knife edges will last decades.
Already a proven point--most of us have old Edges that still work as new...and they are over 20 years old.
I wouldn't worry about them--just take care of those.
