Recess Kahler 2300?

Hi,

I've got a guitar with an old 80's Kahler 2300 trem. I've been struggling to get a good balance between string action and roller height on the saddles.
If I adjust the saddles for low string action they are far to low to get a good amount of pressure on the roller. This results in the rollers rattling which isn't ideal. Also the string rubs on the Philips screw and grub screw which can't be good for keeping in tune.
I've raised the saddles for optimum roller pressure and no string rubbing but the action is far to high, around 4mm at the 24th fret! I've posted a pic of the saddle at the correct height.
Now I've thought about recessing the whole trem into the body of the guitar to maintain the roller height and have the low string action I'm looking for. Has anyone here done this on one of their guitars or seen it done before? If so any tips? It seems extreme but I can't think of another way to solve the problem.

Cheers,
Pete

Re: Recess Kahler 2300?

Check the neck relief first, make sure it's no more than about 0.012" at the 7th fret. Adjust as necessary.

Then you simply need to shim the neck assuming it's a bolt on neck joint, this will lower your action dramatically, add more thin shims if you need to until you get the action where you want it.

It's a whole lot simpler than recessing the trem, unless you have a through or set neck in which case we're back to square one.

Hi Sepulchrave,

Yep the problem is that it's a neck thru guitar. Lovely to play but no adjustment which is a pain!

So I'm guessing recessing is the only option?

Thanks,
Pete

Re: Recess Kahler 2300?

You can still adjust the truss rod to straighten the neck but I'm concerned that your tremolo system may be 'tired'.

These people have all the spares you may need as well as the original setup and adjustment manuals:

https://www.whammyparts.com/

It sounds like your cam springs may have gone soft, they can supply heavy tension uprated springs as well, you can also get a genuine locking nut from them to preserve the originality of the instrument which might make the ludicrous international postage costs slightly more palatable.

I'd strip the trem unit and carefully inspect everything then order and replace all the worn-out parts and the hateful flip-lock nut.

Re: Recess Kahler 2300?

The neck does have a slight back bow which needs tweaking, just got to get the correct size truss rod wrench through the post.

Yep I've had a look at their site before for spares, you're right about the shipping costs! Replacing the springs is a good idea as they're 30+ years old so I'll get some with a new stringlock.

Yep I've stripped the Trem already and given it a thorough cleaning. Everything looked in good working order just needed a clean.

Thanks for your time, much appreciated.
