Removing the EMG 81-7's from my SC-607B

I'm going to replace the EMG 81-7's with DiMarzio's, only problem I forsee is the larger cavity that the 7-string EMG's will leave. Will I need mounting rings or can I still screw the PU's into the wood with a little foam underneath?

You should still be able to mount them directly with a bit o' foam underneath. The only drawback would be that there will be the extra empty space showing from the larger cavity route. It's just cosmetic, but if it doesn't bother you go for it. If you want to hide some of the larger route, pickup mounting rings should do the trick

Unless you are going to play clean a lot, give the EMGs a chance.
Just play the guitar as it is for 2-3 weeks and I tell you - you will end up keeping them.

No passive pickup does dirty as well as an EMG and after 2 weeks you will be kicking your amp and wondering why your other guitars don't sound as smooth and as defined.

I'm a dyed in the wool metalhead...what's this "play clean" you speak of? I've been kicking the idea around now for awhile; I've had the guitar since 8/03....I dunno, I really want to like the EMG's and I know I'm supposed to being a metal 7-string player and all, but there's something about the tone that I can't get used to.

Funny thing is I've been asking myself why the sound of my ESP doesn't feel smooth like my 1077xl with a Tone Zone in the bridge. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

You're a dyed-in-the-wool metalhead, and you want to get rid of your EMGs?

I know it sounds crazy, like I said I know that I'm supposed to like 'em. They just don't sound right to my ears when I play 'em. Other guys make 'em sound really good, EMG and me it's just not meant to be.

Rather than doing some serious electronic mods on your SC, why not look at other similar instruments like the new Schecter C-7 Blackjack? 26.5" scale with Seymour Duncan JB/59 pickups (which absolutely kill).

Yeah, I may do that. That LTD just plays so nice...we'll see. Thanks everyone for the feedback and info.
