Smile RG Body Wood

Hey all,
I should be ordering a RG body from Kolesar's guitar site soon, maybe as soon as next month. I was just seeing if anyone had any feedback for me about ordering from eddie, although he's on these forums somewhere. And, it should be routed H-S-H and routed for the backstop and Lo-Pro Bridge, I'll be using the PAF-Pro, Jem-single, PAF-Pro configuration and was wondering what is the best wood to use? I've heard alder is a good choice, but I don't mind sticking to the basswood like the real JEM's if I get the right body. Thanks, and any info is appreciated!

Re: RG Body Wood

This is just a guide as a lot of things have to do with the makeup of a guitar's tone.

Re: RG Body Wood

That is a neat chart, so hard to choose the right one. White Ash sounds good as well as many others on that list.

Re: RG Body Wood

Man, if you know you're going with the PAF Pro in both positions, that's probably the only time I'd suggest staying with Basswood. I mean, there are so many cool things you can do with different woods, but the '87 Jem sound recipe is solid. If you don't have them yet, I recommend getting an F spaced bridge and non-F spaced neck. The F spaced pickups are slightly fuller due to the bobbin size and the length of wire. So in a way it's like getting a Neck and Bridge set of PAF Pros. Or you could step up to the Breed Neck pickup in the bridge position. Its just a little more beefed up than the PAF Pro, but it's not a "high output" pickup like the Breed bridge or Evo, etc. Lots of guys who've tried the Breed neck in the bridge position like it very much.

If you wanted to deviate from the Jem sound, then you can take a baby step with Alder, and then the Breed neck pickup in the bridge position would sound great. But with dual PAF Pros, anything else like Mahogany, Walnut, Koa, etc. is going to respond very differently, to the point that you might decide the PAF Pro's aren't the right combination anymore.

Carvin also has a wood page with good descriptions of each wood.

Re: RG Body Wood

Every piece of wood is different. Take those wood "EQ ratings" with a grain of salt.
