SA260 massive fret buzz...

Hi all,
I'm hoping you can help.
I have years of experience in setting up guitars, but this one is beating me.

I'm constantly trying to get this thing "playable".
Here's what I know:

1. Truss Rod - I've added some relief, roughly 0.5mm at the 10th fret.
2. The bridge is as low as it will go and it's still hovering above the body by at least 2mm.
3. Saddles still have plenty of lower and upper room.
4. Tiny bit of sharpness on the E and A strings on the 1st and 2nd frets.
5. Fret buzz all over the neck on most strings.
6. Low E is 3mm on the 15th fret and still buzzing all over, even with the lightest of touches.
7. Frets are brand new, can't see any sticking up, or feeling any problems.
8. Has a set of 9 - 42's.
9. Despite moving the low E saddle, the intonation is still so far off, I've run out of room to move it any further!

If anyone can help any further, please do. I'm at wits end.

I suspect that #7 is where your problem lies. You may also have a twist in the neck??

This is the kind of situation the requires LOTS of high res pics. Without having the guitar in hand, it's extremely difficult to diagnose.

Is there a neck shim in the pocket? If so, it may need to be removed.

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

Thank you.
I suspect a shim or twist issue too. It's a cheapo, so I don't expect precision wood work here, so I'll take the neck off and have a look.

I can take high res photos. What exactly do you need?
Thank you!

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

Also note.... there were a LOT of SA260 variants. They've had a ton of different bridges, necks, and neck joints.........including a set-neck version. What year is your guitar? Flamed/Quilt top? Maple or Rosewood fretboard?

You can see it here:

Mahogany, maple cap, maple neck, rosewood board, SAT PRO II bridge. Bolt on 22 fret neck.

The 260 can be a real "wolf in sheep's clothing". There are some VERY high quality versions....and some really crappy ones too...LOL

Take pics of everything from every angle you can. Set up an album at your favorite photo sharing site, then provide us a link.

Obviously it has a bolt-on, that's good. more room for adjustment/fixes.

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

I don't see anything immediately obvious. Have you checked you neck with a straight edge down the sides and then checked the frets with a fret rocker??

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

I have noticed the neck only bends up to the 10th or 11th fret when adding relief. Aside from that, using a straight edge and adjusting the truss rod, it appears perfectly straight.

I just tried the rocker, quite a few frets have the tiniest wobble. Maybe a dress is required.
But I just can't understand how that could cause such a huge fret buzz, so I'll take the neck off later and try it with and without a shim.

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

that's a good idea.taking the neck off also gives you the opportunity to check whether it's twisted or not.

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

If most of the strings are buzzing, I'm wondering if the nut is a tad lower than it should be.

I thought about that, but it looks high enough in the pics. The action is so high that the nut would be negated on a fretted note anyway........ it has to be something with the frets, fretboard, neck, or possibly the neck pocket.

I also wonder of it's not another unrelated part making noise during vibration. I've had that happen when a screw on the spring retainer was loose. Took me forever to find where the noise was coming from.

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

this might sound weird but make sure your pickups are low enough.
the neck pup looks way high.

i got a 7620 cam in from shipping buzzing everywhere i was so pissed.
then i noticed the neck pickup didnt look right.

it popped out and was hitting the strings.

Re: SA260 massive fret buzz...

Ok I've taken the neck off and found a slim rear shim, about 1mm. It had sunken into the wood, so probably only doing 0.5mm difference.

I just tried shims from 0.1 upto about 1.5mm. None make any difference.
The tuners are also snapping the high E and B strings each time I de-tune and setup.

I'm going to have to resign myself to the fact that there is a neck issue I can't see with my eye, and probably in need of a minor fret dress/crown.

It's a lot of money here, so I think It's going to be sitting in a cupboard for a few months

I can't thank you all enough for your help, sincerely RGTFanatic.
You went above and beyond, but I just can't find the problem.
