Setup idea?

I setup my guitar myself for a while now but I don't consider myself as an expert so here comes the question with little story background:

I had an ibanez guitar (I sold later on) that some guy setuped for me many years ago, I can't remember any details but must be something like this.

The guy added a shim under the neck+setup (said the guitar needed it at the time) and even 0.9 strings were tight like 0.12 which I loved later on. I want to get that on my current guitar if possible (using 0.10's now).

The guitar's action was low but buzzing wasn't heard when amped (at least as I remember).

My guess is after the shim he didn't tighten the neck (low inside tension, I don't know english term) and adjusted the tremolo (probably trem. "hight" was increased-trem was trs).

At least thats my idea and I'm open to other before I start testing...I'm pretty sure though the trick started with the shim.

even 0.9 strings were tight like 0.12

dont understand this, I thought tension was a function of the scale length, tuning and thickness.

Thats not going to change by shimming the neck and adjusting the action.

Also buzzing when amped is usually nothing to do with the neck, its commonly electrical interference from power transformers or lights. Can be reduced with better wiring or shielding.

I though maybe it can do something with the angle (help of neck adjustment) but sure I can totally be wrong as I'm asking

By buzz I mean fret buzz, sorry for limited english-you know when action is too low strings hit frets when played...at least this couldn't be heard obviously so string were not too lowered.

Re: Setup idea?

I wouldnt shim the neck until you have adjusted the truss rod and checked the nut and bridge height,

if you are asking how to set up a guitar for low action there are lots of good guides on the internet and youtube, without the make and model of your guitar its hard to be more helpful.

If its ok let me ask this way; if the distance of string changes that provide same note-then tightness of string will change too right?

If yes, by help of shim and truss rod change-this change of "distance" is possible?

Re: Setup idea?

if the length of string changes, for the same note the tension will change.

shim and truss rod just changes the height of the string above the fretboard,
will not have a significant effect on tension.
