Spring Claw screws

Been looking for an alternative to the traditional #8 round head spring claw screws. No matter what material their made of, steel, SS, zink the heads consistantly seem to strip out.

Has anyone tried a drywall screw for this app and maybe using a #10 in size.

I know the pilot hole will have a direct effect on the tightness of the screw in the wood. How tight should these screw be given they are the anchors for the bridge.

Re: Spring Claw screws

I ditched the traditional style claw on my RG a while back in favour of the Schaller Sure Claw. If I ever pick up any other trem-loaded guitars, it's the first thing I'd fit. Single allen bolt in the back adjusts both sides together. I prefer how much more solid it is over the normal 2 screw claw.

Re: Spring Claw screws

I've been looking at one of those myself. I think I'll try it on my next tremolo project.

That aside, look at exterior deck screws as a replacement. They come in larger sizes with coarse threads and use a square bit to turn them. Very seldom have I seen square bit screws strip. Phillips and Flathead should be things of the past at this point but they are still plentiful.

Re: Spring Claw screws

I agree with the square bit decking screws! I had poked around and found a hardened steel exterior #8 decking screw. Definitely gonna go with that.

Thanks for your input guys!
