Unfinished neck gets sticky

How can I prevent my guitar's unfinished neck from getting sticky? It isn't dirt, but some sort of change in the wood from my sweat.

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

sand it down, apply many coats of tung oil, rub it down with steel wool, more tung oil.

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

Can you elaborate?

What grain of sandpaper?
What grade of steel wool?
What type / brand of tung oil, and where to buy it?

Thanks!

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

personally, i sand back my necks with a minimum of 400 grit, use 100% pure tung oil, and 0000-grade steel wool.

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

i just use a sanding sponge to give a very light fine sand now and then to get any oils and dirt off and bring back that total 'plays like buttah'. i gave it slightly more of a sand the first time to get just a little extra finish off it and then i just leave it unfinished

did i mention it plays like buttah?

So how does it play after that?

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

like buttah!!!

sand off 120 -> 220 -> 320 -> 400 -> 600 grit on a palm orbital sander
then by hand 1000 and sometimes a little scotchbrite then 0000 steel
followed by lemon oil to seal it up...

lemon scented BUTTAH!!!!

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

yeah, like buttah! i just have the sanding sponge handy and now and then give a very quick light sand and it's back to buttahness

i don't think you'll ever get a neck to stop building up oils and crap on the back, just needs a light clean or sand now and then

Holy fugg. U guys were right! It's better than new!

Next time I'm using Lavender essential oil to seal it up. I use this on the fingerboard and it's nice. It's a lavendar colored flame-topped guitar with a vine on it. My lavendar guitar. Or lavender?

Re: Unfinished neck gets sticky

I always just wipe the neck down after playing. I've never had a sticky neck so far so...
