Ibanez AF 207 7 string jazzer-24.7"scale?? - Scale length is

Hi guys,

I was wondering why Ibanez would implement a 24.7" scale length on a full size 7 string jazz guitar.

If Ibanez had done their homework, they would know that the vast majority of 7 string jazz players tune the 7th string down to A.

At 24.7" it is not adequate. *It is my opinion but I think many would agree with me.

I would like to see Ibanez produce a 7 string jazz box with a 25.5" scale. Bring it on !

Ibanez AF 207 7 string jazzer-24.7"scale??

I know I had some nerve discussing anything to do with jazz, being surrounded by predominantly full tilt shredders, and all.

But hey, when you got a beef with Ibanez, you gotta vent your soul so you can once again strive for world peace and perfect harmony. :sarcasm:

Ahhh......I feel much better.

Being *the owner of a Herbie Mann CD, I'll respond. :-)

Ibanez did the scale length to give the feel of a 6 in a 7 package. *Good idea, on paper. *If I'm not mistaken, the guitar came tuned BEADGBE...from the factory. *With that tuning, it'd feel quite normal. *Dropping to A...yikes....fughetaboutit. LOL

Maybe they could offer it in two different scale lenghts? *24.75" and 25.5". * Just an idea.

In the meantime, you *could* have the bridge re-set at 25.5 by a trusted luthier. *Just a thought....

BTW- nice ride!

I am not sure what their line of thinking is/was. Maybe it was playing comfort?

Keep in mind if you change the neck scale (ie bridge placement) you will need a new fretboard with appropriate fret spacing ...glen

Yes, precisely ! *To have the bridge moved means you must also have a new re fret job or the intonation would be horrible. In fact, worse than horrible.

For causing me all this...this terrible grief, Ibanez can look at my little dude here :angryfire:

It makes zero sense to make a jazz guitar with such a short scale. *When you tune the low B down to A, it would be not so great. So Ibanez, the next 7 string jazzer you make; give it a 25.5" scale.

Sorry guys...I wasn't thinking straight. Too sore from beach volleyball. *I got sand in places you don't want to know about. :-)

From what I understand, the AF207 ships from the factory with 12-62's. *I knew they were thicker, but...wow....62? *Ok.

Have you changed the sizing? *Still using 62's? *Lowering the diameter will change things, and probably not to your liking.

I could put a low A that is about as fat as my traffic finger, but I like flatwounds. *And selection, especially for a low A is very limited.

Nonetheless, a longer scale length is the preferred fix in my opinion.

It's always a pleasure talking to you boys. Here are my two little dudes; just cuz I like 'em *:shoot: :angryfire:

.062 is actually very LIGHT for a jazz 7 string tuned to an A. The common range seems to be .070 to .080. I use a .072.

I too get some vague jazz mumblings occasionaly, and a 25.5 would be nice, but what about the XL (27") scale lengh?

Re: Ibanez AF 207 7 string jazzer-24.7

Even though I have yet to even see an AF 207 in person, let alone play one, it is THE guitar I'm most interested in because its a hollow body. I aggree that It should have a longer scale length, though I keep it in standard tuning.

Speedball, don't worry about discussing jazz around here! I'm allways happy to see more people talking about it, as its where most of my musical interest is.
