Alex Skolnick

There's a new Testament DVD 'Live in London' just released, with all the original Testament members-including Alex Skolnick.
They rock through a lot of old classics-the sound is great, the visuals not terribly outstanding, and not enough close-ups during the solos.
Alex plays his socks off, and the band look like they're having fun.
Only about 10 quid on amazon.

Skolnick is IMO the best of the shredders from the thrash era and he's a great bloke in person-check out his jazzy stuff (Alex Skolnick Trio) for a different take on rock 'standards'.

Any other Skolnick fans

??

Re: Alex Skolnick

I'm a big Skolnick fan. Practice What You Preach and Over The Wall are my favourite solos by him. His Jazz Trio aren't bad either.

I was actually at that London gig, you can see me quite a few times in the dvd wearing a black bandana with big skulls printed over it. It's not over hyped either, the gig was really intense. I couldn't last the whole set in the pit, i was about to faint from dehydration haha. I'll treasure that gig for a long time.

Re: Alex Skolnick

I'm a huge Skolnick fan.

Did he play all his solos note for note or did he mix it up and improvise some......I'd like to hear how his lead playing has grown in a metal context with all his Jazz playing these days.

I saw him with the jazz trio, he's not a great jazzer, but he's not too bad at it either. It was a fun gig.

I heard some of his albums sounds pretty good to me but nothing spectacular. For spectacular jazz there is always Stanley Jordan .

Re: Alex Skolnick

He impressed the heck outta me at the TSO show i saw last year. Didn't even know it was him at the beginning!

I think i saw testament open for somebody back in the day (maybe extreme or dweezil zappa?). obviously he looked totally different.

His playing at the TSO show was incredibly tasty and the tone was delicious as well.

Re: Alex Skolnick

Yes, he's definately tasty. Not the most innovative or exciting improviser, but the playing is by no means bad.

Re: Alex Skolnick

I've always loved Skolnick's playing on all Testament albums, especially Practice What You Preach. I haven't heard anything recent by him though. He has gone jazz and I would love to check out some of his new stuff.
