I never really listened to Maiden because I HATE the only song I ever hear on the radio, "Run To The Hills". I recently listened to some harmonized solos on youtube and decided to check out Maiden.
I bought the Essential Album, I'm loving it. Cool early metal tone, and playing and songs like Pashendale, Rainmaker, Wicker Man, and Brave New World have really got my attention. I haven't finished both disks yet but I'm liking what I'm hearing.
Is the new album any good? Also, do they use Marshalls?
The new album is wicked i saw them live in london,
if you wanna know more about their gears you should get the death on the road DVD, has bonus disc with interviews with their roadies and goes through their gears

I love Maiden but I'm very picky about my Maiden. I think some of their stuff just kills, ...and other stuff just sucks donkey balls. I personally despised the new album and felt like none of the songs went anywhere, just dead space, and not "my" Maiden. Live After Death is my favorite, and Somewhere In Time, Powerslave and Seventh Son are great albums, though it took me years to warm up to the Seventh Son album.
One thing that is apparent when I listen to maiden, ...if you compare the record versions of their songs to the live performance, the live stuff just slays the record versions. When I hear the original CD version of the stuff on Live After Death, I think it sounds plum ridiculous.
Well, that's my 2-cents worth anyway. Everyone has their own opinions. Mine are strong on this subject.

Me too. A friend pretty much forced me to listen to every album from Iron Maiden thru Powerslave 'round about 1985. I walked out of that session with a killer buzz and new love for Maiden. I still have fun jamming along to those albums.
After Somewhere In Time I started losing interest in the band but those first five albums are classics. Somewhere in Time is pretty cool too - Golden Years and Deja Vu still get me fired up. Live After Death is pretty essential to anyone who appreciates the 80's era Maiden as well.
Iron Maiden and Bruce pwns all...I can't believe you don't like Run to the Hills, it kicks ass, but yeah, its sorta like the Enter Sandman of Maiden, played way to much.
If you like Iron Maiden and never heard of Iced Earth, check them out too, similar but a bit heavier...
I'm not wildly keen on the new one despite all the critics raving about it. One thing you could always rely on with all the albums was a bit you could sing in the shower - this one doesn't really have anything like that.
And the big three - Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave - are the best consecutive metal albums ever (even though Powerslave had the bog awgul Losfer Words on it and concentrated a bit too much on swordfighting...)
Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast are two of my all time favorite 80's metal albums, even to this day. It is amazing how many bands are actually influenced by Maiden. I still have some of my old posters, picture disks and albums in a foot locker in storage, ala time capsule style.
I saw G-n-R open for Maiden back in the day at Alpine Valley, WI (where SRV's helicopter went down), which is where I saw MOST of the best concerts of my life when I was in HS, including front row seats for the Monsters of Rock in '88 with Van Hagar headlining (and also Scorpions, Metallica, Dokken, and Kingdom Clone on the same ticket).
As with many here....i love the older stuff!! Considering metal is supposed to be dark and heavy music, Maiden are actually really chillin' and fun to listen to Some classic songwriting. Steve Harris knows his beans
Hated the Paul Dianno stuff Running Free is still one of the worst songs ever to grace a Maiden record IMHO
The Bruce stuff is awesome. Lyrically they got their sh*t together by that point
I like the fact that when Adrian came back they kept Janick Gers. That said something about the kind of people they were, at least on the surface...
Wasted years is my favorite song the solo kicks my ass every time I listen to it. Poppy enough to be a radio/MTV hit but didn't make any concessions on who or what the band was about!!!
Adrian Smith is my favorite Maiden guitarist, and I tend to like his written contributions a tad better as well
I met Nicko many times and he is the funniest nicest drummer ever
i love the hell out of maiden. that being said, i can't listen to anything after seventh son, or basically after adrian left. the interplay between adrian (the better of the 2 imo) and dave was essentially what made maiden...well, maiden and janick gers just doesn't do it for me. even with adrian back, janick still screws it up, so it's doubtful i'll ever get into any newer maiden. luckily there are all of those great albums from the past.
and regarding live after death...great performance, but the mix kinda blows. dave is too loud in comparison to adrian, which makes it hard for me to enjoy it as much as the studio cds.
Maiden are awesome! Espcecially after seeing them a few weeks ago on the Somewhere Back in Time tour. Janick there really doesn't bother me that much. Sure Dave and Adrian are awesome, and on this tour Janick held back a bit and only really solo'd on the couple of songs that he originally played on. His stage presence was still great though.
I've now finally got my hands on the first six albums now, and loving them all. I've been listening to Beast since I was a wee lad (probably 3 or 4). It's the first album I really remember listening to, and requesting it be put on all the time.
I picked Trooper up tonight except for the solo, I hope to get the into for number of the beast, I haven't tried it yet.
