"paganini 5th caprice by jason becker"

that's funny - makes it sound like Jason Becker wrote it. I had a request on a wedding sheet once that said "Pachelbel's Canon in D by Mozart".

have fun practicing!

I'm getting there

But I'm learning Yngwie's version of it featured on the latest issue of GW.

I've learnt it a few years ago. it's quite cool but impossible to fit in to any of the songs i was doing in covers band that i was in at the time.

i bought a cd of all the paganini caprices..they are all frighteningly fast...it made me wonder if it's easier to play at mad speeds on a violin and i reckon it is!...no picking...just a bow!

I've worked on that one on and off for about 4 years. Yngwie's transcription was originally posted in a set of lessons in like 1999. Its difficult, but enjoyable. I can play it through page 2 ! Page 3 is where it gets monstrous.

Overall, learning it has been very rewarding. Good luck !

There are quite a few tab versions of paganini's 5th caprice. I found some easier to learn and play than others. I have the new GW magazine. I'm not that crazy about Yngwie's version. Check out www.mysongbook.com for some other versions.

I learned it once when I was studying jazz/classical guitar in college. It's a VERY cool piece. I used it more for practicing and warming up.

Is that the same one that Paul Gilbert played on the first Racer X tape "Street Legal?"

I don't think Racer X used it that I'm aware of... I remember there was Moto Perpetuo (Perpetual Motion) by Paganini inserted into one of their songs, but I don't know about the caprice.

I'm learning it atm. Hard, but not unplayable. Not as good as the 16th Caprice though! That really is a challenge.

Re: any one here learned to play paganini 5th caprice by jason becker?

I bought the actual sheet music for the song. Lets me put the fingerings the right way the first time instead of having to mess around with other peoples mess ups on tabs. Gets you better at reading music too. I suggest if you learn anything classical, just get the sheet music for it rather than tab.

True, although you can also learn a lot from the way someone arranges a peice on the fretboard...

Conversely, you can learn a lot by arranging it yourself. Both are valuable practice tools, when used in conjunction.
