Armed with a pencil - And darkness to burn

Hi,

Apart from playing guitar most of the time, i am a part time nursing assisant in a secure unit in a mental hospital. Now i have finally got off my arse and brought a manuscript book to try and write music away from the instrument, now as i am on *a night shift tonight and it will be a quiet night and i will have alot of spare to be creative.

Now i ask you people if you have any advice on writing away from the instrument. I can read music and understand notation and transposition, but i wonder if you guys have any tips or tricks.

Cheers

Beavis

Armed with a pencil

i used to practice notating things like nursery rhymes and stuff like that so that i could check myself when i got home --- good ear training, without actually using your ears . *of course when you get past nursery rhymes you can do more difficult things like concertos or the like. *that way you dont find yourself writing something thats not exactly whats in your head, but later on playing it and going "eh, thats pretty cool too", cuz the objective is to be able to write down exactly whats goin on in your head.
