Beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons question!

Hey all,

Quick question for you...

What songs would you expect (or like to) to learn while taking beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons.

Cheers
Dave.

Re: Beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons question!

It depends on the student's preferences. If you force-feed as an instructor, the student will lose interest.

This is why I'm asking for feedback on this topic... just doing a small bit of market research to get some ideas & start putting some material together...

Cheers

Please, for the love of god, don't anyone suggest "Smoke on the Water".

You'd be surprised how many kids actually ask to learn that tune.

Actually I'm not. I don't frequent music shops too often but even I've witnessed it enough to understand signs like these:

It's a cliche I'd really like to see put to death.

Re: Beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons question!

I've been teaching for years and this is always a tough question.

All these kids play the guitar video games, and the playlists in those games are actually pretty broad. I can't believe kids actually ask me to write out "Reign In Blood" by Slayer for them! (For the record I am pro-Slayer.) So picking songs from the video games is a good start.

Here's the bottom line: Music has to be coming in in order for it to come out. THEY should own some music that they like, and there is no better curriculum than teaching them what they listen to. I have yet to produce a successful student who does not listen to music. If they do not have their own musical suggestions, it is a sign you will quickly hit a dead end with them.

Re: Beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons question!

If anyone asks to learn to play Through the Fire and Flames, simply show them the multitude of horrid and sloppy covers of the song and say "Now, do you want to be one of those people?". If they really want to learn a Dragonforce song, try Valley of the Damned or other songs from that album. The solos are still way way way too hard for a beginner/intermediate, but it is a lot easier to make it sound good.

If they are into more metal than rock, you can try songs from bands like Metallica (Master of Puppets), Iron Maiden (Run to the hills, The trooper, etc), Megadeth (Symphony of Destruction), Pantera(Cowboys from Hell, Walk), etc. Whatever you do though, make sure they don't even begin to try the solos before they can play the rest of the song

Re: Beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons question!

When iI started taking lessons. I wanted to learn easy stuff that rocked. Enter Sandman, The Roadhouse Blues. And then I learned some Santana stuff. Kinda funn to play. I found what made it fun for me was my instructor taught me some rhythm and then he would play along and when he came up with an easy riff he taught me. I thought that was alot of fun.We didnt do that in every session mind you.

Re: Beginner/intermediate rock guitar lessons question!

"Little Wing" of Hendrix is a cool song. You can just learn a singler version if you want (ask your teacher). If you are learning scales, you can also practice soloing once you learned the chords.
