Can you nail down the best tone you ever heard to the specific song, I can: John Petrucci on A Change of Seasons playing Achillies Last Stand during the solo. It's the best to me.
What was he using at this time? Pickups, guitar amps? Anyone know? What kind of pickup could I use to achieve this type of sound?
Please, share your ultimate tone down to the song and section if you want.
I really love the tones on Joe's Crystal planet album, but if I had to narrow it down, i'd say that the solo tone on House Full of Bullets is as close to perfection as I have heard imho.
The ironic thing is that when I look for tones when i'm playing, I like using a more old school metal sound myself. If I tried for that sort of tone, it just wouldn't be "me".
ahhhhh i forgot about that.1987 album was awsome, steve vai described it as guitar players paridse.im pretty sure jon sykes used mesa boogie amps on this album.
alice coopers might aswell be on mars and dangerous tonight i think satch plays on one not sure as i lost the booklet but they are really nice tones to me anyway
Jason Becker on Altitudes
Michael Lee Firkins on Jason Becker's End of the Beginning
Randy Rhoads on Blizzard of Ozz particularly Mr. Crowley
Paul Gilbert on Technical Difficulties and The Curse of Castle Dragon
Eric Johnson on Cliffs of Dover
You really think so about Kashmir? Page is one of my favourite guitar players ever, and gets higher up the list as time goes on, but I can't honestly say I think he pulls many truly great guitar tones - although, speaking of the ultimate in cliches, his tone in the lead break of Stairway to Heaven is something to be aspired to....
These are but a handful of songs with great guitar tone that make one want to pick it up & start playing:

Satch - Searching
Love the tone on the latest Machine Head album
Metallica - MOP, Orion in particular
Nuno Bettencourt on the second track on Waiting For The Punchline. Whatever the song is called, that tone is BADASS. Possibly my ideal tone, to be honest. Kinda "single coil on steroids". Perfect.
Allan Holdsworth. Damn, whether it's clean or lead, the guy knows good tone.
