Building the Church- Tone

Hey Everyone,
I was trying to learn the intro to building the church and I think I pretty much got the notes right with the two hand tapping and all but every time I play it, you can hear open strings and doesn't sound quite right, so its kinda...chaotic?
So are they any special effects that i need to use or is it just something I'm doing wrong with the tapping? Or anything else
Thanks a lot!
Cheers

Re: Building the Church- Tone

I'm almost certain the original uses a midi synth pickup.

I'd also guess that in the studio Vai might have wrapped something around the nut to silence the open strings, don't think he does it live though.

A hair bobble or sock does the job pretty well.

The reason he puts one hand over the top of the neck is to mute and to play, also he did use some sort of synth on another track to get that tone. I think he has a keyboardist play the synth part live.

Yeah, use your normal fretting hand to mute behind where you're tapping.
