It's a way to stop strings if you hit or touch somethng you don't wanna to saund...it makes things easier for sure!

The playing my teacher is exhibiting is hardly 'shredding', it's very tasteful fusion. I couldn't care less about shredding in all fairness.

Personally I think 'shred' has been exhausted by people sat in their bedrooms on youtube. That is UNLESS you add some other elements that make your playing different to everybody else a la Guthrie Govan.
PG and his ilk get away with it because they're the innovators in my book.

I studied for 4 years with the late Sal Salvador.
I loved the guy - he was a father-figure to me in so many ways.
