Dumb Question: How many octaves between Bass & Guitar?

I was just wonder how many octaves are between a normal low E string on a guitar vs. that of a bass.

I've read either one or two octaves in different places. But with the differences in TONE and me having no Oscilloscope (or whatever it is) measuring device handy, how do you tell?

Re: Dumb Question: How many octaves between Bass & Guitar?

Regular four string bass in regular tuning is one octave lower than a regular six string guitar in regular tuning (or the difference between low E strings, if you wish).

One good way to see it without being able to hear it is to think of string gauge. Bass D string is often .060 with a lot longer scale. Guitar low E string is often .048 with a shorter scale. The D string on a bass is a low E string on a guitar tuned down one whole step.

Many ways to see it. Choose one.

Like ^ said, it's one octave. Unless that the bass is a Vampyre bass. Then I think it's two.

Thanks. I've seen it stated both ways and this video, he says two:

One.

The low E on a bass guitar is one octave lower than the low E on a guitar.

The second fret on the D string of a bass guitar is the same note as the low E on a guitar.
