Fast Bass players with two finger technique?

Hey there! IŽd like to know whether anyone knows fast bass players that only use two fingers for plucking the strings.

I have a really hard time getting used to playing with a plektrum so I consider switching to electric bass mainly (I already played the bass for a couple of years but not with the same effort as the guitar).

I think that playing with three fingers makes it very difficult because you often have to divide two or four by three. IŽd like to have a more intuitive approach to the bass, which I have when I play with only the index and the middle finger (because there are basically only two ways you can hit the string, either with the index finger or with the middle finger).

The question now is whether i can get fast enough with only two fingers. IŽd like to play Jazz scales in the style of John Mclaughlin or Al Di Meola on the bass. Can anyone maybe recommnend me a bass player that can play things like that on the bass?

Thanks!

Tobi

Why limit yourself to just two fingers?

If you poke around on YouTube, Billy Sheehan has some videos where he goes into a few tricks for making using three or four fingers more even and easier.

If you check out a site like Talkbass.com you can get great advice too.

Good luck regardless.

Re: Fast Bass players with two finger technique?

Check out the techniques of some of the classic metal/hard rock players such as Geddy Lee (Rush) and Steve Harris (Iron Maiden). They had great bass finger technique. Harris, at least, I'm pretty sure was a 2-finger player most of the time.

Of course I'm a guitarist not a bassist so I'm relying on memory here & not any personally learned techniques, but that's what springs to mind for me...

(slghtly off-topic but) That's a great interview session there, he says some great stuff about how to improvise and tradition.
And technically that's pretty cool what he's doing !

Check out Jack Bruce (from Cream), he might be what you're looking for.

Re: Fast Bass players with two finger technique?

Steve Harris uses two fingers indeed, as do I

Check this out (and some interesting Bruce Dickinson statement: Samson - prior to Iron Maiden - and reasons why, enjoyin' playin' with them back in the day, he nonetheless felt nearly compelled to leave'em... basically their behavior)

they (Iron Maiden) were recording live at Abbey Road, around 2007 I think

Cheers,
