Re: free guitars

Depends on how famous you are and being sponsored may mean you get free parts or cheaper guitars or access to custom jobs etc...

Red face Re: free guitars

Also depends how often you gig. Smaller local bands that gig a lot might get endorsed and get their guitars at cost/wholesale. It also depends on the company. Gibson is very strict about what they do, but I would suppose Cort is fairly liberal in comparison...

Re: free guitars

It totally depends on the contract, and the stature of the player.

For example, IIRC, when Dave Mustaine signed with Dean (as he described it -- where I read this, I don't remember), his deal called for a percentage of each guitar in his line that was sold, plus 11 guitars a year. That's not a lot by most people's thinking, but certainly helps.

What is to explain, the quoted message seems to pretty much elucidate the issue..

Re: free guitars

On a slightly different but similar vein, I heard Marshall is particularly strict about handing out free loot, no matter the endorser. Apparently one of the few exceptions was Slash forking over one of his fav vintage Marshalls so they could copy it and reproduce it. I think he either got 1 or 4 free ones, I'm pretty spotty on the details. Everyone else pays for their amps.

If you have a sig model obviously you should get some of them free, but I'm pretty sure endorsements USUALLY have to do with publicity and actually liking the product over money (Except Dean, in which it's the other way around. Even Dimebag got re-snagged because they'd pay more dough than Washburn).

Re: free guitars

Also, it depends on if you are getting a signature made how rich you are versus how much you push their gear.

i.e. Say: you are dude in "Band X" Your band is signed to "Label Z" that is only semi-national (like Victory Records, Sumerian, etc etc)...but you are touring year around, non-stop, and you sell a decent amount of records (30,000-50,000).

This should entitle you to at least type B maybe A sponsorship. Now...if you have enough cash to buy 20 custom guitars that are your specifications, you may get your own limited run custom model....That's also $40,000+ worth of guitars. (Just ask the guy in As I Lay Dying!)
