Funk/Fazz ideas - Funk + Jazz = Fazz

Hello,
I need some lessons/ideas for playing fazz (see title) for my band. I've never studied funk much because I'm really not into it but all the other people in the band like it. Basically, all I have right in now are 9 chords, muted strumming, and a wah pedal!

Thanks!

Funk/Fazz ideas

One of the most important things about getting a funk band to really funk, is to do a lot of jamming together.. For example, the drummer starts to play a funky grove and the bass player lays a funky bass grove over that.. Then try to jusst fit in two notes in the groove.. maybe in octaves too... If the other band members are in to funk as you mentioned, that should help you a lot too... You pretty much cant go wrong... *I will post a few examples of some really funky grooves... But that can take a while... The general tips from me is, borrow some funk from your bandmates, and listen to it. If you dont like it, then there isn't really much to do... You gotta love the funk/groove to play it well... If you like what you hear, then listen to it some more, and you'll soon be playing some serious funky rythms... Me myself played rhodes in a funk band, and added some jazz flavor by often laying strait jazz cords on the rhodes, to the groove... Otherwise i can recomend playing around on the blues scale... *The blues gets a whole new flavor when used in soft jazz/funk style grooves... It sounds soo good its incredible...

(I saw Nils Landgren Funk Unit the other day, and it was very svängigt !! *(thats a sweedish word, heheheh) )

Also when playing jazz/funk style, i can recomend using a lot of II-V-I progressions, like Dm9 - G13/G7+5+9 - CMaj9, a lot of color add to the jazz flavor.... *

Maybe, but I don't think so.

But fusion ideas would be great too. More rock/jazz fusion than metal/jazz fusion. I want a sound much like if you combined Eric Johnson, Liquid Tension Experiment (Liquid Dreams only), Dave Weckl, and Steely Dan.

I feel a little bit limited to the two basic bar chord voicings for m7, maj 7, dom7 chords and the like when improvising. I want some really pretty voicings and progressions to work on. Some help with improving that aspect of my playing would be useful. I just want to work on really good chordal improvisation.

Drop 2 and Drop 3 voicings on guitar are sweet. Use those and your comping instantly starts sounding more JAZZZ piano like. It Also works works for progressive stuff DT mahavishnu, vai etc etc

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by drop 2 and drop 3 voicings.

BTW: I'm looking for really good tab of "Peg" by Steely Dan. The only one I can find isn't very good. If any of you have tabbed it out or want to I'd really like a look-see.

Thanks,
