Hermes, 11 yr old playing "Building the Church"

Michael Hermes, 11 year old playing Steve Vai's "Building the Church"

There is a comment by Steve in the comments (not sure if that is really him or not.)

I quit. I'm gonna put my guitars up for sale now. We're gonna have to keep watch on this kid.

Re: Hermes, 11 yr old playing "Building the Church"

Awesome. Inspirational an depressing at the same time...

If anyone in here knows this kid, encourage him to WRITE! There have been an awful lot of kids like this that are brilliant mimics but fade into obscurity when they don't produce anything original. Just like John McRocklin from "The Audience is Listening" video ("little Stevie Vai").

Having incredible technical skills like this puts a young musician so far ahead of the curve it's ridiculous, but they have to learn to find their own sound, their own expression. Applaud their covers such as this killer video, but encourage them to reach beyond to that intangible something that makes a true artist like Vai or Satch who they are. Technique should be a tool for creating art, not the art in and of itself.

That was meant to be encouraging to this youngster and not disparaging by the way... Not sure if it came off the way I meant it but oh well. Good luck kid!
