Question how to get faster?

Yup. Just wanted to know what you guys do to get faster on the fretboard. I myself do scales with a metrenome over and over again(very very tedious), and was just wondering how you guys do it.

Re: how to get faster?

i always find that when my left hand gets moving, then i can start to do some decent playing. my picking hand normally doesn't take as much of a warm-up / exercise. so to move that left hand, i try diminished and augmented triads across single strings, anywhere above the 12th fret usually.

example

--12 - 15 - 18-------------------------
---------------12 -15 -18-------------
--------------------------12 -15 -18--
------------------------------------- etc.
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
1 2 4 1 2 4 1 2 4

or

--12 - 16 - 20 -----------------------------
---------------12 - 16 -20 ----------------
----------------------------12 - 16 -20 ----
-------------------------------------------- etc.
-------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
1 2 4 1 2 4 1 2 4
then try all those alternate picking/legato/string-skipping ideas that you can think of.

btw, check out a video of shawn lane's "hot licks" intro, and you'll see him rip these patterns apart. ridiculous!

Re: how to get faster?

I used to worry about learning how to play fast because a lot of the artist I was listening to at the time could and I couldn't. So I tried all that tedious stuff like what's mentioned above and it was a VERY slow process. Eventually I just gave up on the concept of being able to play fast or "shred" and just started enjoying what I COULD do on guitar and then BAMMM...I found that I COULD play fast.

But a cool thing that I have been working with recently is something that I got from Romeo, which is playing odd groupings of notes. I've also been working on doing that thing where you add an extra note in a sequence by tapping it so I'm getting a lot better with transitioning between the two techniques.
