Mixing problems

I've been doing some recording, and I'm really enjoying it. However, I've been having some trouble mixing. I can't seem to get a "good" sound Everything sounds a bit far-away, etc

Here is an example: http://users.tmok.com/~keith/music/halloween.mp3

I've tried playing with the mix, but it's still not right: http://users.tmok.com/~keith/music/halloweenremix.mp3

Just ignore the timing errors, out-of-key bends, and generally bad playing

I'm using my amp's headphone out into the PC line-in. Would using a mic help?

Can anyone give me some hints? Also, does anyone know of a good place to host music? My web space won't cut it for long...

Thanks!

g'day keith,

www.digitalsoundplanet.com is a good place to host your music. They give you 10Mb worth of space and I think unlimited d/l's of your music pretty much. That's where my mp3's are.

wil..

ps. in the process of d/l'ding your music

I am listening to this now..

a) double track guitars - ie. play rythm parts twice, pan one to left one to right - this mix sounds like mono
b) sorry to say that but drums suck - sound like lame late '80 amiga scene production - and it has huge impact on whole mix
Try to find some better loops or at least pan those drums a bit
c) on my speakers it all sounds to muddy - try to EQ whole mix a bit - up > 12khz range a bit (thats where presence is)
d) add some reverb

The guitar does seem very far away in the mix on your tracks. What application are you using to record with?

I'm using Cakewalk Sonar XL.

My setup is:
Guitar -> Amp (Line6 Spider) headphone out -> computer line in

I know I probably should be using a mic, but all I have right now is a really terrible 'computer' microphone.
