if you're having problems getting out the bluesy sounding stuff, you're probably relying too much on pentatonics and the standard hammer-on/pull-off approach to soloing. *Some suggestions:

Learn and practice:

Know every note on the fretboard. *It's laborious but I can't explain how helpful this is.

Major & Minor Scales

Harmonic & Melodic Minor Scales

7 Major Modes:
Ionian
Aeolian
Dorian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Phrygian
Locrian

Chordal approach to soloing:
ie: *"Little Wing", Eric Johnson's "Manhattan" & "Trademark"

Two Hand Technique:
EVH, Vai, Satch and others

Alternate picking:
Petrucci, Gilbert

Sweep Picking:
Frank Gambale, Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen

Lastly: *Listen to non guitar music and try to take something from it. *Great examples are horn and piano players.

Hey VaiGuy....I know what you mean....I have the same problems....I always talk smack about how I hate when people solo only in the blues box or pentatonic box shapes, and then I'll pick up my DBK and start doing it too! *LOL....it's truly maddening, but I find it helps me to try to play long runs at high speed....that kind of gets me out of "blues lick mode"...give it a shot, maybe that will help you....but then you start to sound like a linear-playing scale machine (aka Yngwie J. Malmsteen ), so who's to really say which is worse?

I don't know about any of you guys but i don't think i'll ever get sick of the pentatonic scale, no matter how many times I abuse it. Either way, I still sound kinda crappy

I don't personally have a problem with the pentatonic scale. *I do have problems with folks who stay the in the BB King Box though. *Eric Johnson does some beautiful things and 99% of his work is pentatonic. * *It's all a matter of phrasing.

That's true, I never really thought about it though. *It's true about the way the voicings are done with Eric, once you stop and think about it. *i think I'll hit the Eric books now...

Yeah, it's all in the matter of how you use it. *Phrasing and dynamics are definitely key.

also check Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock II for some pentatonic licks that really rock.
