Playing clean

I can't play very clean. I try to mute the strings I'm not playing with my right hand but I can never seem to play all that clean. The top strings always find a way to ring out. Any suggestions on how to practice playing cleaner. Thanks

Guess improving your timing and picking accuracy might be the first step here. Knowing when to alternate pick, when to sweep, economy pick etc... is also essential i belive. Try making your fingers comfortable with the neck. A bad guitar setup will also effect your playing. Even your right hand must stay in a position where the sides of the palm won't make any contact with the strings. most players tend to do so because they tend to rest their pinky or ring finger on the guitars body and this has advantages yet disadvantages.
