Re: Prince can shred!

Shred?!
He keeps repeating the same penta boxes for 3 minutes with no melody.
You just have to memorize a minor penta and keep playing it up and down.
All lazy players do that but some in darkness

Cool Portnoy with a toy drum
Man PG's tone is sooooooooo thin in the first clip and sooooooo muddy in the next one.
Miking and mixing can make you shine or kill you!

Re: Prince can shred!

If you want to hear someone shred on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", look no further than Vinnie Moore. For some reason, this video has pictures of different "shredders", not sure what that's about.

Somehow I knew how this thread would go before opening it, some people are too predictable. I'm with you Silver, Prince is good.

I liked it too.

I think Treva thinks 'if you're not using pure scales/modes, and are trying to use a 'less is more' approach, then you're just boring.'

Whatever, we're all entitled to our own tastes.

I'm sure everyone has heard the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated".

I think the guitar solo on that track is absolutely brilliant.

I'm sure Treva will disagree...

Re: Prince can shred!

Well I can relate, I can't stand punk unless it's the Remones or Fugazi, the two that I don't even consider true punk, Remones are too pop and Fugazi's too melodic. Anyway, it's my birthday so by nature it's my day to be pissy and easily annoyed, so carry on and never mind me.

Re: Prince can shred!

You're right though, the Ramones were really the first 'Pop Punk' band since they toned down the wildness of it a bit and made it more 'friendly' to radio play.
Not a Fugazi fan myself... they just don't 'do it' for me even though I respect they went in the direction they did with it.

Like I said before, we all have our own tastes so it's ALL good music... it's in the ear of the beholder.

Polka anyone?

The man is an absolute genius...

If anyone gets to see him live do not miss your chance!

Actually i would have loved him to be considered the vocalist-co-guitarist for the Hendrix experience.... that would have been phenomenal...His Red House is unbelievable.

Re: Prince can shred!

By far not his best solo IMO, sloppy, seems like he's not really focused. Certainly not THEE best solo ever, lol. When he's on, it brings me way more chills. If he hadn't made it so hard to find his material online I would post a link now that crushes the OP link.

That said, I like it better than the others posted here. PG is one of my all time favs but he can't convey the blues properly, IMO, at least I can't get into it. Same with Vinnie. At least Prince conveyed it well and probably gave 90% of that audience goose bumps without even trying.

This song was penned by the Brits in a style created here in the US. The Brits have been highly instrumental in the shaping of what it was to become, but for the most part stayed true to it's roots (some straight up copying). Blues is the cry of the black man in a white man's world. Surely everyone is familiar with oppression and can respect that. There is only so much theory that belongs in this style. It may be boring to some but to others it's a spiritual and emotional thing, and really has nothing to do with the guitar. When you start trying to get all Gilbert in a blues song it becomes self indulgent and far removed from it's rooted intentions, almost meaningless.

Re: Prince can shred!

The title of the thread is Prince can shred. While there's nothing wrong with his solo to me, I certainly wouldn't call it shredding. I only posted the Vinnie link as an example of someone "shredding" on the same song.

Re: Prince can shred!

I agree with that, not shredding and not the best solo ever as the vid title claims.

Re: Prince can shred!

I thought this was a thread about Prince being able to Shred.

Where does feeling, and being restrained factor into the definition of "shred"?

*shrugs*
