Steve Vai without a Whammy Bar ?

I wonder how Steve Vai would sound without the Whammy bar :P
I mean, it's part of his tone . Anyone else had this thought?

yeah i have actually!

It would be different, but I honestly think he'd manage just fine.
The whammy is something you can adapt with or without super quick. I use it like an animal, and I remember the first time my whammy broke, and the butt was stuck in the bridge...didn't know how to take it out, and couldn't afford to take it to a tech. so it stayed in the there for weeks, and my playing totally adapted Quite refreshing actually.

If I can do it, surely steve can, only better

There are pics of Steve floating around here playing a fixed-bridge JEM.

I'm sure he'd probably sound a lot like he did on "The Boy from Seattle". I don't think that there was much (if any) trem use on that one. Or "Sisters"-no trem work there.

The nut on my Jackson got all messed up, so I leave the clamps off and blocked the bridge. Haven't been able to use the trem in a while. I've thought about getting the nut replaced, but I'm in no hurry.

If you mean the rhythm part of Boy from Seattle then, yeah, no whammy. But there's the solo bit, where he has the guitar delayed, if I remember correctly...

"The Boy From Seattle" was recorded using a cheap Strat. There's no trademark Vai whammy work on the song at all. Tremolo/vibrato is one thing...whammying is another.

The solo is full of whammying, espeically in the beginning of it, there's a dive bomb, around 3:23.

on this subject, does anyone else find that when they play a guitar with no whammy bar they find themselves reaching for it without thinking, only to find it not there?

haha yeah, when i'm doing excersizes i don't have it plugged in, but then i'll break into a bluesy riff thing or a run after i finish a set of excersizes and try to end it with a big bit of whammy (ab)use

thinking about it, i often try to pick up other guitars by the monkey grip when they are on my knee. Tried lifting my UV up by the grip the other day, felt a bit stupid after that.
