Re: Story of Light songs

I listened to the whole album 3 times.
Throwed it inside of a drawer to never "see" it again, kept only that Hawaiian kind of song.

Re: Story of Light songs

I'm new here, but I have to say I really don't understand the people who don't like this album. I can understand a member of the general population not liking it, but for someone who is already a Vai fan, I'm not sure what could be disappointing about this album. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I love almost the whole thing.

Gravity Storm is my favorite, but I also love the title track, Velorum, Creamsicle Sunset, Weeping China Doll, and it kind of surprises me how much I love Book of the Seven Seals. These are my favorites, but there really aren't any songs I dislike.

Simply, Vai is repeating himself, nothing new there and no melody got my attention.
When he should be melodic and deep, he put those cheesy annoying keyboards and tried to make it sound weird, he already did that a lot so it's just repetition.

Plus I'm not a brainless fanboy who swallow everything Vai plays.
And in the opposite line of you, Gravity Storm is crap, sounds like Vai's tape recorder was broken.Awful boring melody, after 20 seconds my ears kept asking me to turn it off.
I won't even talk about mix cause it's terrible, guitars sound good but all other instruments are terrible TO MY EARS.
But I love that hawaiian kind of song

I tried listening to it. First song played and I thought I put the wrong album on. Sounded like ultrazone. Have yet to make it through the whole album.

All artists repeat themselves, to greater or lesser extents. Most blues sounds very similar to me, and I think even fans would acknowledge that it does, yet there are musicians who spend their entire lives playing the blues, exploring the many variations on a time-tested form. I think if you expect any musician to do something completely different on every album, you've missed the point.

Neither do I really appreciate the implication that I'm a "brainless fanboy who swallows everything Vai plays." There are many Vai songs I don't particularly care for, and many that I love.

I've been reading this forum for a while, even though I haven't posted much, but I can already tell you have a real problem respecting other people's opinions. I'm already over it.

Re: Story of Light songs

I don't dislike it. It features some great playing, of course. I've never cared for Vai's vocal songs (I'm not a fan of vocal songs, period), so this album didn't much change that. I don't like Gravity Storm, it's too dissonant for me. I do like that he used the seven string guitars more. If I had to pick a favorite song, I'd say "Weeping China Doll". Decent groove with seven strings. It's a few notes away from being awesome, though.

I said I'M not a brainless fanboy, there was no implication there, you saw what you wanted to see.
So...I have a problem respecting other people's opinions?
I gave my opinion.
YOU came to contradict it saying "I'm new here, but I have to say I really don't understand the people who don't like this album. I can understand a member of the general population not liking it, but for someone who is already a Vai fan, I'm not sure what could be disappointing about this album."

In other words YOU don't understand why I don't like this album.YOU don't respect my opinion.YOU replied to my reply, it wasn't me who did that.

So read this thread again and you'll see who came to reply against my tastes.
And again I said I'M not a brainless fanboy, I was refering to myself and not you cause I don't know you.

Well I'm being civil(I hope so), I came here and ONLY gave my opinion about an album. That guy came and said he can't understand my opinions.
I did nothing wrong(I hope so again), he can't understand my opinions but said I have a problem with other opinions.
That's insanity lol.

Re: Story of Light songs

The OP asked for opinions, and everyone's got one. Why is one member's opinion bashed on?
The album is just okay. I neither love it, nor hate it. I agree with Treva and Moebius--sounds like rehashed licks.

Re: Story of Light songs

I havnt yet bought the album, but I listened to gravity storm and liked it ,and ive heard the moon and I on the net ,.nice music though not my cup of tea.

I have yet to hear the rest of it .

yeah I should buy it ,but I think steve is doing ok financially ,and im poor so im not giving him my money easily as the ultra zone ended up being used as a go fetch toy for my dog ,and she wouldnt go and fetch it ,..though I do still have most of G3 on DVD

Re: Story of Light songs

I don't have the album, but I saw him live, and I think performance wise, he's at his best. The songs from the new album he played were pretty good, they blended in with the whole Vai canon well (which may be the source of complaint).
