Technique and Music II - Got the inspiration but....

Ok i would just like to thank all the guys who posted replys a while back, I now have another small problem,

I know have the thoughts of melody, some inspiration, normally when i have just got into bed but anyway i have a few crazy and melodic ideas but i can't get them down onto tape..........i am also diognosed with G.A.S so i have lots of equipment to use (and i know how to use) to record it with, mainly cubase with digital mixing desk..... so my problem is i record my melody or fragment and it never goes anywhere, i need tips on embelishment, i don't know what to add, i am stuck going round in circles and end up deleting it all and getting frustrated. I also have snippits that i can't take anywhere.

I was always jealous of this guy at GIT who didn't have any equipment only a pacifica (desperatly needed a re fret) and a park G10 amp, now he was the best guitarist at the college also unfortuanly he was the poorest anyway me being the one with a bit of recording gear i invited him around my house and i nearly died.

This guy sat at my computer for 8 hours solid and finished 2 song. Using synths, drum machine, cubase and a guitar. *Later one of these songs was to be the song he re recorded later for a GI Funk compotition (total guitar magazine) which he won. So this guy didn't have any paper or any music written down. Ok the thing that scared me was that he had the whole song in his head, everything the drum, bass, 4 part counterpoint, guitar solo everything even down to the last ride symbol. and he just worked through cubase and put all the drums in by hand etc etc and the song is amazing.

Now i find it hard to imagine the guitar and bass parts all the way through let along the drums and everthing else, he just seemed to know what everything would sound like together....

Anyway my problem is just recording something, my brain decides to shut down of all originality when i record something and i can't see the broarder picture, i haven't got any reason behind the music.

So i am asking the jemsite forum to give me some advice on how to approach grooves, drum patterns, bass parts, etc etc.

I know there is loads about this subject but some friendly advice would be much apreciated.

i say dont go for the "whole song streaming through your head idea", first learn to build a song. *start with a drum groove, then lay a bass part on it, then some rhythm guitar, then jam over it for a while until you start feeling some melodic ideas coming in. *this is basically just an exercise, but youll find that after doing it enough youll start to do it all in your head and youll begin to hear the finished product before you lay down the first track. *its great if this guy or anyone else can hear the entire song right off the bat, but everyone cant -- you have to work up to it. *sometimes i hear the whole thing, sometimes i build it --- but neither has an affect on how the song turns out in the end. *when i hear the whole thing, sometimes i cant record it fast enough and i start to lose parts and get very frustrated; *then sometimes when i build a song i have a lack of purpose and it has no feeling, but either way, there are always 387 bad songs for every good one. *so you just have to work with it until you find what YOUR creative process entails. *hope this helps a little.

I have also worked my way through making lots and lots of music with qubase, and i say as shawn said. Practice making drumgrooves etc.... Analyze a existing groove, and listen to the drums, and the bass.. *One good way, (as with almost everything) is to try to make a copy of a existing groove. Try to make your version sound exactly ,on the spot like the groove. Every base tone, every hihat, everything.. If you have done that a couple of times, you will soon be printing out new grooves in your sleep...

When having acomplished the task of learning to make high quality sounding grooves, the problem comes, what cordprogression should i do now ??

Any ideas on working up a nice cordprogression ?
