Vai's 13 favorite albums revealed

SYL, Skrillex, Beefheart? Now I love you even more, Steve! Great quote, "We deprive ourselves the opportunity of appreciating something that is artistic, by making certain claims and being dogmatic or snobbish about it."

Yeah, it's stupid annoying that they didn't just make a list for us to look at. But at least he has a cool story for each one.

Re: Vai's 13 favorite albums revealed

I like what he said about Skrillex. It shows that he's mature enough as a person/musician that he's gotten past all of the phases that we sometimes go through like "pop music sucks" or this guitarist is sooooo terrible but this other guy (who really isn't necessarily better) is sooooo good.
I know when I was growing up listening to music, a lot of the stuff that I liked was stuff that nobody else that I knew listened to, and I felt like it was my own unique thing, and I guess I felt cooler for it (when going through the awkward growing-up years). I used to hate anything on the Top 40 stations just because I didn't like the people I knew that listened to it. It was a reaction against something, rather than an unbiased judgement or appreciation of it. But I like that he can look at something that has mainstream appeal, and not automatically dislike it. I don't know that maturity is the correct word, but it's a refreshing thing to see from someone with his background and position in the musical world.

Agreed, I used to do the same thing, even with sitcoms or you name it, if the majority was digging it then it must be garbage because they're all sheep. I didn't start watching Seinfeld till the third year of reruns because of this, same with family guy, now that's one of my favorite shows, lol. The music I used to hate was '80s new wave, now I love hearing it because it takes me back to special places in my past. I'm not the biggest Skrillex fan, but I did produce breaks in the '90s, so I can appreciate electronic music, and I think it's so cool to know that Steve is open to it as well. Dubstep has a more rocking vibe these days, so I can see why he likes it. I wonder if he ever listens to hiphop.

Good thoughts, it seems that we've both "leveled up" since our younger days hahaha

Electric Ladyland and Led Zep II would be on my list too...very cool to see Devin Townsend made the list with Strapping Young Lad...If you haven't listened to any of Devin Townsend's original music then you need to - he is truly an original and an amazing talent...and Canadian ;o)

+1

And I don't care how cliche it is, but Zeppelin is my favorite band.. period. Always has and always will be.

"My kids come home with all this dubstep stuff and I go to raves occasionally –not too much but I’ve been to a few...."
