Vai's Trick Bag?

hi guys,

I was on the net at school 2day, and as they have broadband i decided to download some videos off vai.com. I ended up downloading the Soundcheck New York 97 one, and to my amazement vai was doing some really cool stuff in it (about 3/4 of the way thru) , it may have been two hand tapping but im not sure, could anyone possibly *please* let me in on what he was doing, thanks!

If I remember correctly, the part you are thinking of is not two hand tapping. Instead, Vai was playing a descending bass line with his right middle finger while playing some legato stuff (hammer ons and pull offs) with his left hand. Two handed tapping is something different. Just download some more Vai videos and one of them is bound to have two handed tapping in it.

What he is doing is a group of hammer-ons/pull-offs with his left, while using his right for "pedal" notes. His pull-offs would normally go to an open string, but by placing his right hand behind his left, he is now fretting new (and changing) notes.
I think.........

satch uses this method as well. It's also a novel way of string-damping for crazy rushed rough tapping.
