Re: Who was it that finally made you pick up the guitar

It was actually my grandfather.... my father also played. I never expected it (music or guitar) to the biggest thing in my life. I was enamored by the exposure to music they provided.

Your lucky to have had your grandfather, etc. No one in my family played.

When I first heard Vernon Reid's sick chops on Cult of Personality when I was 7 or 8, when they were on SNL.

For me it was early Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth, etc. and of course Satch. Right around when Flying In A Blue Dream came out.

This guy...

Thank God he played a yellow Jem though in Nothing But A Good Time video. That made me get my first Ibanez catalog, which made me buy my first RG570, which made me find out about Steve Vai's Passion & Warfare, and Dream Theater.

Re: Who was it that finally made you pick up the guitar

Well,.. I figured I wanted to play myself.. And bought a real crappy acoustic for $10 from a friend ( still have it,... unplayable!! ).

And then magic happened..

A friend of mine who was a drummer introduced me to dreamtheater's music.

I bought an electric ( epiphone SG, hey, what did I know? )

More magic..

I met my guitar teacher! The biggest inspiration I ever had. It was like having John Petrucci, Yngwie and/or Steve Vai in my bedroom teaching me. The guy still is an amazing player! He made me progress sooooo much. Now, we're good friends and he still amazes me with his playing. Great motivation !

I saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan when I was 2 and started asking for guitars right then and there.

I remember music videos in the early 80s, but I really wanted to play once I started listening to Metallica.

Hmmmm.... we're talking early 70's here... I was fascinated by the sleeve of Electric Warrior.

This, and my older brother, are pretty much what got me on the train.

Re: Who was it that finally made you pick up the guitar

I think we all know who inspired me (dimebag) but its really the bands like pantera, and like Herman Li, and Rusty Cooley that inspire me to keep going, there have been times were im like, **** guitar, and then watch rusty cooley and saw OH **** ME GOT TO PRACTICE BIG TIME, and just practice! So really all those guys.

Re: Who was it that finally made you pick up the guitar

Mine was Steve Vai and my cousin.
I always wanted to play guitar but when I heard Vai on Slip of the Tongue ( I know I know...) I had to learn what he was doing, and when my cousin came over with his guitar one day I realized 2 things:
1)Anyone can learn if they work at it
2)Chicks dig guitar players.
.....and from that day on I've been poor but happy.
