Anybody Watching / Buying anything from the Les Paul Auction?

Part 1 is still going on, 2 is tomorrow, and 3 on Sunday. Amazing prices on run of the mill guitars with the special ones bringing serious money. Some of the gear bringing serious dough also.

I guess nobody is

My favorite piece in the first session was this letter. For under a couple grand it would have been a steal, but not for the 10k it got bid to! I figured it would go high though.

58 1927 GIBSON L5 @ $87.500 nice!

Am a little concerned by how some of LPs personal effects went for more than some of his guitars.

Did you pick anything up Rich?

Wow--didn't even hear about this!
Thanks for sharing, Rich. Some amazing stuff there, and some of it going for less than I thought.

There were a few things I would have bid on if the price was reasonable but of course the stuff I liked all went crazy high. Even his NJ DL with the Special Deputy badge, cool, but not a grand+ cool, to me

If you look through the catalog you'd think Les was the ultimate pack rat. I don't think he ever sold anything or threw anything out, and I'm wondering how much storage space he had!!

I thought the 2 SS cards were pretty cool.

Yea, one in each name. I missed half the auction today playing golf. I figured it would be over by the time I got home but they were moving so sloooooow I think I got home around lot 200.

Re: Anybody Watching / Buying anything from the Les Paul Auction?

I have to admit I was obsessed with the auction to the point I was selling gear to build up a war chest for bidding. I didn't post about it here, but maybe I ought to have . . . the commentary over at MLP forums didn't really go past "wow, cool gee-tars!"

I was fascinated and delighted by the catalog . . . I saw many things that made me think, "the average Joe (or average Mikey, ha ha) is going to be able to score something cool."

I was right.

There were early bargains, a few Gibson Les Paul Customs went for about what you would pay for a new one today, off the wall of some big box store (lots 21-24).

Amps were a bargain overall; many common guitars went for many times their usual price on the used market but common amps went for 1.5-2 times used market value. I guess if you can't hang it on the wall and have it look pretty, rich collectors aren't interested. I dunno.

Peace

Mike

Yeah, cool gear!
I was more interested in the personal items like the SS cards, etc. Really cool stuff!

Anything in particular? And the sad face would seem to indicate that you might've bid, but it was out of your reach?

I paid about five times used market value for the guitar I won. I sold some stuff to be able to afford it, a guitar, a couple amps, and one of my two cars (both beaters, but, hey whatever, I'm still rolling).

Peace

Re: Anybody Watching / Buying anything from the Les Paul Auction?

Julien's auction house has shipped my guitar. As I write this, it's in a truck rolling across the desert Southwest. NGD imminent!

Peace

I am torn between excitement and dread . . . I keep thinking about that FedEx thread of yours, Rich, with the red JS. Grrr . . .
