Which Builder?

Hello everyone,

I just joined the Jemsite in hopes of finding a custom builder for my next guitar. It is of course based off the Jem with a few of my own specs added in. I've built other guitars in the past so I'm fairly clear on what I want. What is unclear is who is going to give me the best quality, communication, reliable wait time for my money? In looking at other threads it seems some builders are down right hated. I've seen people rip Sim's (referred to as Satan in one thread) and Chris Woods all over the place on here. Conversely, I've seen respectful endorsement of ET Guitars and Jaden Rose. As redundant as I'm sure this thread is, I'm new and I would like to get as much direct advice as possible. Thanks!

Re: Which Builder?

Welcome to jemsite!

I would recommend finding a local luthier who can build you anthing you like. Since you live close to NY, finding a great local luthier shouldn't be too difficult.

Off all the custom projects i've done, every builder or luthier has his own flaws, but i am the most impressed by the work of Mike Sherman. His guitars ring even acoustically incredible loud and sound, play and look great.

My 2 cents.

Re: Which Builder?

Brosa does have a good point in that someone local is often easier to deal with. That said, I'm a big fan of Jaden's but he is a local luthier for me so I'm able to hop in the car and drive over to his workshop/factory (which is itself pretty damn cool by the way). Furthermore I don't know if he builds anything these days that isn't in his regular lineup, so he might not be doing cutom JEM replicas anymore. It's definitely worth going to his website and contacting him through there.
