6505+ Versatility issues?

Hey guys, im saving up for a 6505+ and i was wondering about the versatility. I've heard the clearest clean you can get is still very fuzzy, and then i've heard you can get a beautiful clean tone. I was wondering about this because I love playing grindcore, and similar things, but I also have a passion for the Blues, stuff like John Mayer. All input is welcome, anything will help.

Jake.

Metal and blues tones are easy to get out of this amp... Crystal cleans are a bit tricky. If you have a rather low output pickup and the gain down low you should be able to achieve it.

I'm also saving up for one, and when i do, i wanna try putting a lower gain tube in the V1 socket, cause it's a bit stupid to go past 7 on this thing stock... so i figure there's plenty of room to move and still get enough gain saturation, but then i should also be able to get better cleans at the same time.

I'd say it's a very versatile amp.

Im basing this statement on my 5150 (similar to 6505 of course).

Rock and blues tones are divine on this thing. Ive never played an amp that caters to dynamics quite like this one.

Clean tones? What clean tones? lol. I jest, but the cleans you get out of these things arent very good, not compared to some of the boutique or fender reverb-style amps.

John Mayer esque tones? not so much. Id expect some decent mods are required to get those "Crystal" tones you are looking for.

Id say you need to pick and choose whats more important. the Over drive channels are EXTREMELY tough to beat. Completely breath taking!!

would the Katana clean boost help it at all?
when im in a bluesier (?) mood I'd play Stevie Ray Vaughan Type stuff, so i would need a little bit of dirt on my tone.

He's talking about the 6505+(5150II) model though, which has a separate EQ/etc for the clean channel. The + gets decent clean tones.

Re: 6505+ Versatility issues?

i got a great clean out of one at guitar center. you just have to turn the pre AND post gain down. only problem is that those gain knobs are your only source of volume so having them at lower levels will probably result in really low volume thats useless for any stage play (dont know if youll be on a stage or not, i didnt read the thread haha)

Hahaha. I would. But it would be in a Hardcore/Grindcore Band, so no issues there. i mean, jammin with my brother at the house which i don't need but soo much volume for. How bad does the volume get cut?
