Amp Heads stacked.....

...what does it do? and how does it work?

ive seen a lot of artists/bands who have a wall of stacks behind them, and just as an example, ill use Iron Maiden (my fav band! :P):

each of the guitarist has approx 4-6 full Marshall stacks (so A and B cabs) with 2 heads on top of each pair of cabs. this gives them 8-12 heads.

but reading up a little bit on their kit, it says they all use the JMP-1 pre amps, which from what i can tell is pretty much fed into the PA system.

so what is the result of having all these heads all over the place? does it give a better sound? louder? do they go between the pre amp and PA?

HELP?! im gonna drive myself potty with this one soon! :P

Re: Amp Heads stacked.....

I'm willing to bet they are mostly for show, and only one or 2 stacks are used and mic'd through the PA.

Re: Amp Heads stacked.....

It's all about image bro! Looks cool right? The heads are "empty" execpt for the 9 volt battery to turn the light on on the head. They all have their fx racks and the heads that they're really using backstage and would be using one maybe two cabs up front that would be mic'd for the PA. Yup! nothin screams metal more than a wall of Marshalls!!

Yup! Maiden, Priest, Scorpions, Van Halen, Malmsteen, and countless others. All posers, fakers! It's about image, not about being fake.

Re: Amp Heads stacked.....

Yep--all for show! Bands have been doing that for several years. Back on the Tooth And Nail tour, Lynch's wall of Randalls were mostly cardboard props with just 2 "real" heads running a few cabs.

Here's what they've been using:

Adrian: Marshall DSL100
Janick: JMP1 -> 9200
Dave: JMP1 -> DSL100 (as a power amp only)

and 1 Marshall 1960 4x12 for each one of them.

Re: Amp Heads stacked.....

EVH did the wall of cranked Marshalls thing when they toured with Sabbath back in the 70s because that's what Tony Iommi was doing, and he thought that was the norm as a result. He commented later that after shows he was numb, and that Dave wouldn't go near him on stage.

That many big amps running hard would deafen anyone in short order. Heck, even one cranked to bejeezus is pretty hard on your hearing.
