Hey guys,

He uses a flanger towards the end, that's the 'aeroplane' effect.

Re: "Bad horsie" - Live in astoria question

Sorry to be a pedant, but the DS1 is stock. But is that a phaser sound? I imagine he uses that more than a flanger, which gives that 'jet planing' effect.

Sorry, bit OT, but has SV ever used bith the TS and DS as the same time? or does it sound like mush?

Re: "Bad horsie" - Live in astoria question

err, no

http://www.robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=10

read down, you'll see

"From a customer the other day watching Steve Vai..."There's a GREAT shot of your DS-ULTRA pedal in his new DVD Live at the Astoria that he clicks on during "The Animal."..."

I can only assume Steve uses the same DS-1, since it makes no sense to have both a stock and a modded one on the same pedalboard, since the modded one is far better.

Yeah I think Astoria has the modded DS-1 and if you have seen his latest rig pics on vai.com he's went back to the stock one.

I'll agree with that, I have the Keeley DS-1 and I Love it!!

Either on or off the Vai mode, it's far superior to the stock DS-1

If you watch The Animal on the Astoria DVD during the song it zooms into him pressing the DS-1. If you watch it you'll see whether it's a Keeley or not, I can't remember myself.

there are no "latest rig pics" only from the Fire Garden Tour way back in 97 (way before astoria)..nor do I think he would ever go back to stock ones, especially since Mike Keeley talked to steve at last years NAMM (2005) and Steve said He still loves his DS-ultras..(taken from the site http://www.robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=10) I've been pouring over his website and can't find this info.

Actually his rack gear isn't really all that impressive anymore, he really cut back since most of his tone is comming from his Legacys. I believe he still runs a G-major and Eventide and a few other goodies like a Rack-o-wham..

Re: "Bad horsie" - Live in astoria question

If you zoom in on the animal, it looks stock. However, the pic at the bottom of the Keeley page revelas only one way of telling: the switch on left corner. Since you can't see this in the shot, I guess we're all right!

But if your on the VAi forums, search of Real Illusions Gear fest or something like that. You'll see a stock DS-1 and Keeley moded TS. Both covered in ....yuch. Also on Dave W's site, I believe there is mention of SV giving DW one of his Keeley moded DS-1s.

Re: "Bad horsie" - Live in astoria question

Yeah, his DS-ultra on Astora is a pre-switch ultra, he added the switches after, so it looks stock.

"had the pleasure of working with Steve Vai and DAVE WEINER (thanks SO much, Sir!) recently. He sent me 2 Boss DS-1s to modify for him. Somehow he got his hands on my DS-1 and dug it. He sent me his pedals, and while working on them, and while listening to his Live in an Ultra World, I came up with another version. So, I now offer the DS-1 Ultra Mod, which are the exact specs of the pedal that Steve had me create for him. The Ultra has a similar feel to the Seeing Eye mod, but with some noticeable upgrades. It also has the added flexibility of going from SEM to ULTRA with just a switch!"
