Bass amp help

OK I posted a while ago about about a new bass amp but I now have the money for a new bass amp. I can't belive I almost bought the Carvin R1000 head and RL118 cab, I decided it might be a good idea to look reviews of it up on the net before I bought it and found them to be very unrealible after a few months.
So i'm back to square one, I have a max budget of 1000-1100 and would prefer a band new amp. I needs to be at the least 400watts output, can any one please help.
Thanks,

I played bass extensively for a couple years. I started out with a Hartke Kickback 10 (with the aluminum driver). I didn't feel it was handling the extended range of a 5-string well enough at band practice (sounded OK when practicing by myself, however).

I then bought the Carvin "red-eye combo"--I believe it was a 600w power amp with 2 10" speakers and a horn. It was great--very flexible (lots of EQ/preamp tone-shaping options), very reliable, very powerful. I debated getting a 15" or 18" extension cab to go with it--didn't really need it, just thought it would look cool. The 2x10 was certainly enough to get the job done for band rehearsal and gigging.

The band has since broken up, and I've returned to playing guitar, but if I was to seriously play bass again I'd immediately go out and buy another Carvin combo.

I have one main priority when I buy a bass amp.It must have a solidly built power transformer. I found the Carvin red eye 1000 to be a very weak amp. I am lucky to have a bass guru down the street from me who owns a small music store.

He tried running an aguilar preamp into the cartvin and that made it sound alot better adn added clarity. To make a long story short, my trace elliot 300 killed the carvin.ON "2" , my trace was as ballsy as the carvin so called 1000 watt amp. After that, my trace killed the thing.I also owned a Gallien Kruger 800 rb and that thing was totally balless. My trace easily kills that amp.The lack of headroom in that GK amp killed the clarity of the tone.

I understand that price range is a concern for you.IF oyu can afford a used trace Elliot head or combo (pre Gibson) then go for it.I got my 7210 SMC (2x10 combo with tweeter) for $750.00. Some of the Ampeg amps have good power and tone as well.Aguilar makes a pretty solid amp as well.Eden isn't bad but somewhat underpowered.

I don't have experoence with Mesa Boogie's new amps but I never liked their old ones much. They were wooshy sounding .

After these amps, try checking out SWR,then HARtke, then Peavey.
