hm I figured something like that, that is why I was looking into a used laney yesterday, I've been GAS'ing for a jsx but I can't ever find a used one in my price range

I disagree, I think its about a 50/50 split between the preamp tubes and the output tubes, EL34's, 6L6's etc all have different and obvious tones...I've played a ton of hybrid amps with 1-2 12ax7's in the preamp and they didn't sound half as good has a full on tube head, they were missing that glassy tight tone power tubes are known for. A great way to try this would be to drive a triaxis through a solid state power amp, then through an all tube power amp, the difference will knock your socks off..
