the best order to position pedals?

Hi Folks, I’m new to this forum and am seeking the advice of more experienced guitarists to help me achieve the best set up for by effects rig. I have the following pedals and wonder what order you would position them in order to get the best sound from them...
Elecrto harmonix Big muff (with tone wicker)
Boss DD3
Electro harmonix holy grail nano
Electro harmonix Small stone nano
Behringer EQ
Cry Baby wah original
Korg pitch black tuner

any advice and help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Re: the best order to position pedals?

Just google "effect pedal order" and you will get quite a few useful hits.

One of them is an exert from the FAQ on Robert Keeley's site which I personally found quite useful (although some paragraph formatting would be good!): http://www.robertkeeley.com/faq.php#Effect%20Order

Re: the best order to position pedals?

Hi Dr Bone. I would line them up as following;

Guitar -> Tuner -> Cry Baby -> Big Muff -> EQ -> Small Stone -> Holy Grail -> DD3 -> Amplifier.

This is my personal preference and I'm sure there are plenty of other "correct" ways to set them up.

Re: the best order to position pedals?

more conventional use of EQ is in the loop to shape the distortion. If you put it before the amp it will affect pickup response which sounds different. Not saying that it's wrong, just different. The same goes for the DD3, it's usually placed after the distortion happens because you don't want to overdrive delayed signal.

Re: the best order to position pedals?

You might also want to consider adding a buffer...

Re: the best order to position pedals?

No need for a buffer when some of those pedals are buffered bypass.

Yep--didn't read the whole pedal list. Some pedals do have them built in. On a side note, I began the preliminary build of "our" buffer circuit. Still have more tweaking to do, and also get it onto a smaller perfboard. Once I get some results--I'll send you what I've got

This is my set up now! However, I truly believe there is no wrong way to set up pedals...Distorting the sound before processing it, is something I used to mess around with years ago, simply because everyone told me it wasn't the right way...I would try all kinds of variations until I found the one most useful to what I was doing...

If you place the wah first then the sound is processed that way before it becomes distorted, but try to distort it first and then pass it through the wah...Who knows? Whatever has worked historically best isn't always the right way! Good luck!

Re: the best order to position pedals?

it's not just about any kind of signal processing, but more about time based effects, like reverb, delay, chorus.
I agree though that it's not written in stone, but it's more often the case than not.
cheers

You forgot to tell us what kind of amp you're connecting these stompboxes to. Also, does your amp have an effects loop?
