A closet is fine if it doesn't heat too much. basically if you have valves I'd suggest NOT putting it in a closed area. If its a small electric 10 watt, I'm sure a closet would be fine.
I don't understand. What are you worried about? The volume in a small space?
I would recommend an amp stand, something that minimizes the contact between the amp and the floor. The amp sounds better in the room, and transmits less sound to any neighbors below you.

I put my lil' 30 watt on my desk in the corner (sounds more direct, don't have to bend down to fiddle/look at settings, etc), and there's enough space left over to put picks and junk.
Of course I wouldn't mind more room as it's a little tight, but my room isn't massive; just a bed and closet on one side and desk on the other.
