Carvin vs Engl

I'm about to invest in a used tube combo & would really appreciate some input.
I've narrowed my choice down to 2, An Engl screamer or a Carvin Legacy vl212 mk1. Both will cost around the same, I really like the screamer & have tried one out but have no experience using a Carvin & know nothing about how they perform & how reliable they are. Really like the sounds I've heard on youtube though.
I use a fernandes retrorocket elite & play mostly classic rock, but want access to high gain sounds for solos, both these amps do good clean & high gain, really like the channel switching options on the engl but the carvin has the advantage of more wattage and an extra speaker. Opinions more than welcome!

I'm not sure about the engl, but expect to use a boost pedal to get the Carvin into hi gain territory. To really push it into hi gain on it's own, the sheer volume will recombine your DNA...

Re: Carvin vs Engl

I use an ENGL SE head and XXL Pro cab with vintage 30's. Mind you not a combo as you're seeking BUT probably the best rig I've played through and I've used a Dual Rec, 5150, T2, and currently have a 5150 III. The tone is very thick and with leads it really has note definition. Channel switching is something I have to have for gigs/practice. As far as wattage goes, it just depends on where you expect to use the amp. If its for gigs, chances are you'll be mic'd anyway or for bedroom practice I've never heard of anyone wanting to blast an amp, unless they hate their neighbors lol. I've never used a legacy but I would assume it's fairly tailored to sound Vai-like. Hope some of that helps!

Re: Carvin vs Engl

Thanks for that,
Ended up going for the carvin - came in at 70 cheaper than the engl - much prefer a bigger 2x12 sound & it's loaded with v30s, same as the engl. The carvin also has a rich, dark overdrive which I'm liking. For my playing style, I'm finding I can get the sound I need even at low volume, so lack of MV isn't really a problem. I have a custom-modded TS 808 & when put in front of the carvin it really lights this amp up! Used on a clean setting it's like an added 3rd "crunch" channel. Use it on the drive channel & it really provides all the shredding gain that anyone could ever need! Carvin amps are tough to find in the uk, glad I got one!

Asolutely! It's a bloody tone factory, I love the way the dark drive tones cut through the mix without the need for "ice-pick" treble, once you spend a bit of time dialling in your sound - well, it's just a beautiful experience. 360 GBP, I don't think I could have done better with 3 times the budget.
