compressor

What is a compressor,,,, for example a dbx 266. How do you connect it with a drum machine? Thanks. Just learning about gear.

Re: compressor

A compressor reduces (compresses) the dynamic range of an audio signal, that is, it reduces the difference between the quietest and loudest sounds that go through it.

As for connecting it to a drum machine, it depends on what the drum machine is. Does it just have stereo outputs, or can you send each part to an individual output?
The 266 is only a 2 channel compressor, so you'll only be able to run 2 signals through it at once, or everything just in stereo, although that probably wouldn't end up sounding very good.

Re: compressor

Google and Wikipedia are your friends!
From Wiki:
This effect automatically varies the gain of an audio signal to reduce the dynamic range of the signal. In effect, a compressor is an automatic volume control which reduces loud sounds over a certain threshold. A compressor can also function as a limiter if with an extreme setting of the controls (in some cases, a compressor may be marketed as a limiter).
As for connecting to a drum machine, you'd connect the output from the drum machine to the input of the compressor.

Re: compressor

Your comment (google + wiki are your friends) is not too encouraging for a person new to gear and trying to learn. The forum is for people to ask and share ideas, is it not??? Just saying,,,,
