Delay question

I know there are a ton of threads about delays, but maybe if I tell you what I want it will be easier to nail down.

I was looking for a delay pedal. I watched Joe Bonamassa run through his pedalboard. For a delay he used a Boss DD3 and said he loved it. It sounded good too and I heard lots of good things about them. there were many for sale on Ebay so I picked one up. I am having a hard time with it. It seems very sensitive on the settings. For the most part all I want is a simple slap back just to fill out the sound of my guitar. with the DD3 though it sounds like I get a loss of signal and like I have the reverb cranked. I have run it both in front of and through the FX loop. I don't like it on either side!

So I went to the store today and tried out a EHX Memory Boy. Here is what I discovered (for me anyway) the Boss, the MXR CC & the Boss DD-3 all sound to me like are degrading the signal when turned on. It's like all of a sudden the signal drops 10% because they went into a reverb filled tin can.

I tried a pedal I had never heard of and can't remember the name, but used it was $289. What I found was the signal degradation was probably more like only 5% and only a slight discernible loss in tone. So perhaps I am going about this the wrong way. Start at the top and work my way down?

What I am looking for, for the most part is a simple slapback without such a severe signal drop and only a slight reveribsh tone. Any thoughts on this? For the most part other than the general slap back I would be using it on some Floyd tunes.
3I appreciate your opinions.

Re: Delay question

All you need is a delay with true bypass.

Yep, that pretty much says all.
I recently talked with a friend that uses 2 DD-3 for gigs. He had recently swapped one for a DD-7 (it has a loop and other new things) and he didn't liked it, so he went back to the DD-3. He told me that the pedal was way too responsive.
I don't know if this would help you, but telling won't harm.

Re: Delay question

This sounds pretty normal to me. It's only a perceived volume loss as you're multiplying your signal. Try turning the feedback volume down low. The 'reverb filled can' sound is how delays should sound

Re: Delay question

Actually after posting this I went to GC to get some work done by the tech and they had an MXR Carbon Copy and I think that will do nicely. I noticed there was very little drop off in tone and volume between on and off. I don't do a lot with the delay, it's mostly there to add a little fullness to the mix, occasionally I'll need a few more milliseconds but I did like the way it sounds and the price falls into my chap ass budget.... Besides with the exception of an envelope filter I have never met an MXR I didn't like!
So I think this is the way for me to go right now. Thanks for the opinions!
