EQ Pedals?

Would an EQ pedal help out my live sound (I guess even recording for that matter) or does it not make that much of a difference? Right now my amp (Mesa F-100) has the usual bass, treble, mid selection which is ok, but would an EQ pedal make enough of a difference for more of a 'custom' sound? Anyone have one in their rig and think if makes a good difference? Just checking out the possibilities. Thanks!
