EVH's Tone

What gear and pickups is he using to get his tone?

I watched Van Halen's Live Right Here Right Now DVD and I think I really like his tone.

Can somebody help me on htis?

Ed's tone

The LRHRN video sees the following set up:

Ernie Ball MusicMan EVH - DiMarzio custom pickups.
Bob Bradshaw Rack Unit w/ Eventide Harmonizer, Various delays, chorus units.
Peavey 5150 heads and cabs.
Ed runs a wet/dry stereo setup.

The best way to approximate this sound is with a humbucker equipped guitar into a 5150 with a Boss Harmonist pedal in the loop, set the pedal to +/- at 0, this gives a slight widening effect.

Try and get a hold on van Halen live at the ten spot, mtv recording on the VH3 tour, his tone is a million times better and purer than the LRHRN.

I don't wanna be annoying or anything, but quoting from Vai

'EVH played one of my guitars once, the tones in his fingers, damn'

EVH uses a eventide h-3000 for that wide chorus sound which is called pitch detune. He uses the pcm-70 for cathedral and uses 2 roland sde-3000 for delay.

Wolfie

A Wolfgang into a tube amp with some volume going will get you pretty close to the early EVH tone and a MXR Phase 90 and MXR Flanger will also help.

The stuff I suggested in a prior post are the quickest way to get close to the sound of LHRRN dvd.
