Fitting sperzel locking tuners

Today I decided I simply must have some locking tuners on my RG321, I restrung my guitar today and the G and B string keep slipping out of tune and I'm losing my temper. Do they require any drilling out to fit them to an RG321? And I assume getting plain chrome ones won't be too hard?

Re: Fitting sperzel locking tuners

The reason they might be slipping could be because they're not wound properly.

To answer your question, Sperzels will require you to drill a hole for the pin to secure to the headstock. Gotoh makes locking tuners that might retrofit on your RG and they come in cosmo..

I got sperzel locking tuners on my Ibanez-replica Legacy neck with 0 problems. But if I recall, my builder did have to drill those holes for the pin.

also, check your nut. you might have some string binding if the nut has not been set up correctly.

Re: Fitting sperzel locking tuners

I found a new .11 for the B and that's helped. Still, I'd rather not the hassle of making sure the winding is correct, and often the ones that slip tend to be the same one, namely the G.

As for drilling, I think with Sperzel they're just 'locating pins' which could be drilled out with relative ease, no?

Re: Fitting sperzel locking tuners

on a non-trem guitar, it's almost invariably the nut causing you tuning issues - machine head gears, no matter how ordinary in quality rarely slip. Suggest you check for string binding in the nut before you shell out sixty bucks or whatever it is for Sperzels.

For a non-locking trem, the Sperzels are fantastic - I got the UberStrat back from Luthier-to-the-Stars Piers Crocker about a month ago now (Gotoh/Wilkinson GT100 trem/Graphtech nut/Sperzel tuners) and the damn thing is STILL in tune!
