Re: Floyd rose original

To my knowledge there's 3 different types of floyd roses...

- Floyd Rose Special designed by Ping
- Floyd Rose Original designed by Schaller
- Floyd Rose Liscensed designed by Gotoh

Re: Floyd rose original

The Gotoh is just as good, if not better. Plus it's cheaper too.

Forget this "designed by" stuff:

The Floyd Rose Special is made in Korea, by Ping.

The Floyd Rose Original is made in Germany, by Schaller

Gotoh's Licensed Floyd is made in Japan, by Gotoh of course.

I have a Kramer 1984 re-issue with the Schaller Floyd. It is definitely high-quality.

Re: Floyd rose original

Very easy...

If it is stamped "Made in Germany" on the bottom, then you want it.

That being said, the MIK units that come on the Charvel promods is not a bad unit for what it cost.

Re: Floyd rose original

The Ping is actually very good! In fact,l it's good enough to be called a Floyd Rose--not Licensed Under Floyd Rose Patents. Floyd himself gave them approval.

Re: Floyd rose original

The Ping (not the Floyd Rose Special, but the Ping Floyd Rose) is reputed to be excellent, as noted above. Pricewise, they are not far off the Gotohs, which are also supposed to be very good.

And let's not forget the Schaller Floyd Rose -- the one with the thicker base and the shorter string anchor screws with the wider barrels. More expensive, but also an excellent bridge:

Re: Floyd rose original

The Ping, Schaller, and Gotoh are all an "Original Floyd Rose" in terms of not being the same thing as the "licensed Floyd Rose" you see on lower-end guitars. All three are considered to be Floyd Rose tremelo units, not a copy licensed by Floyd Rose to be put on a budget model. However, they're all technically "licensed" by Floyd Rose -- that makes any sense.

If you ask Floyd Rose, they'll tell you that they stand by the quality of all three. The Ping version is very common, even the $3000+ Les Paul Axcess uses it.

Perceived quality-wise by players, however, it's just as others have said. I prefer the Schallers from Germany. AFAIK, the Gotoh ones might be better made, but the Schallers/Pings are the ones that look like the same specs as the older ones, and I just prefer to buy the German made ones. I've never tried a Gotoh, but I've read that some manufacturers (like Suhr) are switching to those.
